Colt 1911 Information

This military automatic was the first pistol in .45ACP caliber (Automatic Colt Pistol) of the US Army. It was used in the army for more than 70 years. Following the official transfer of the first series of pistols in January 1912, a great number of major and minor modifications were made in the course of time. For example, there was a modification in 1913 when a different rear sight was used. In 1914, the hammer spur was extended and enlarged. In 1915, a small series was made for the Canadian army in a different caliber, .445, in connection with a large surfeits of ammunition from the Webley & Scott ammunition for pistols. Several factories were licensed to manufacture the Colt 1911, because Colt was unable to deal with the large orders from the army on its own. These include Savage Ammunitions Co, North American Arms in Canada, Remington Arms, Union Switch& Signal Co, Singer Sewing Machines, Remington Rand, Caron Brothers in Canada, Springfield Amory and also Norway. The historic development which eventually resulted the Colt 1911 actually started in 1892. In that year the old Colt Single –Action Army .45 was replaced by the .38 (.38 Long Colt) Double –Action New Army revolver. This represented great progress, because the revolver had a swing-out cylinder and could therefore by rapidly loaded or reloaded. In addition, the shooter could fire very quickly in double-action. However, in combat situations the cartridge appeared to be less ideal. This was demonstrated in a rather painful way during the Philippine rebellion of 1899. The stopping force of the new .38 Colt cartridge proved to be extremely unsatisfactory. Therefore the army was forced to dig up the rejected single-action .45 army revolvers. As the rest of the world was successively transferring to automatics, the American War Department considered that it should not fall behind. From 1907 to 1911, the army conducted extensive test series with all sorts of trial weapons. On the bases of these the arms commission unanimously agreed that the Colt 1911 should be the new army pistol. They decided on the official cartridge, viz . the .45 Government Automatic Cartridge. This cartridge had a bullet of 233 grains and was developed by the American Frankford Arsenal based on an earlier Browning design. In the First World War, the Colt 1911 played an important role in the trenches in France and Belgium. The pistol proved to be very valuable there. Since its introduction in 1911, various minor modifications have been made in the model, including a broader front sight, a larger grip safety, a shooter trigger and finger grooves in the grip frame at the level of the trigger guard. The hammer spring housing in the backstrap was also made rounder so that the pistol was easier to use. These modifications were developed by the Springfield Armory. The "renovated" pistol was than given the name "1911-A1"
